On the first Sunday of Advent (27 Nov.) we will begin the lectionary readings of Cycle B. This is the year when the majority of the Sunday gospels are from Mark. This three session course is designed to help prepare for the Mark gospels. It is an overview of Mark’s gospel with an emphasis on general themes. A list of reading materials will also be provided.

January 12, 19, 26, 2012
9:00 – 11:00am in the parish hall
All too often morality is thought of in terms of laws and sanctions. In other words, people mistakenly think what is moral is imposed by the observance and enforcement of laws. Vatican II reminded us that the informed conscience takes precedence. When one honestly searches for the true and good, there is genuine morality. A Christian’s understanding and exercise of morality goes beyond law. Christian morality includes ethics. We will explore the issues of conscience, freedom, responsibility, authority and how Christian morality can unite with the aspirations of the secular world.

February 5, February 12, February 19, 2012
All parishioners are welcome to this rich, yet informal, prayer/discussion experience. We have a topic each week, but we begin by hosting any questions attendees have about our church, our beliefs, our faith, and simply how to live it. This is good; we welcome you to come each week or whenever you have a burning question.
February 5 - Mary, Mother of God - What can Mary show me about discipleship? Have I ever felt challenged by God like Mary was? How did I respond?
February 12 - New Testament - What exactly do I believe is the new covenant God has made with humans? How do I live out that promise in my life? Is the New Testament all good news?
February 19 - Holy Spirit/Conversion - There are special gifts of the Spirit - How do we use them? How does my life show my trust that the Spirit guides and leads me? When I truly repent does God honestly forget my sins? Is the Holy Spirit equal to the Father and Jesus?

The Book Club meets once a month on the 4th Friday at 9:00 a.m. in the parish hall.
The purpose of this program is for participants to read a few novels during the course of the year and spend a morning sharing the insights each has regarding the novel in conjunction with our common faith. In the first session we had on October 1, 2004, we looked at what makes a writing “Catholic” and developed a rubric for our reflections on the individual novels. Novels are selected from suggestions from the group.
Check with the parish office to see if there are copies available on the selections below. We try to acquire used books for the sessions.
September 23, 2011 — Unaccustomed Earth Jhumpa Lahiri
October 28, 2011 — Portrait of a Artist as a Young Man James Joyce
November 18, 2011 — The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo Stieg Larsson

It is mandated by the Diocese of Phoenix and Ascension that all volunteers in ministries MUST complete the Called to Protect sessions provided by the parish in order to serve on a ministry. It is especially important that all volunteers who are directly involved with children complete the Called to Protect for Families/Ministries. An annual renewal session can be completed on–line or through the parish. Volunteers not directly involved with children must first complete the Called to Protect for Families/Ministries, and renew every other year on-line or at the parish.
